Dr Pieter HERTHOGS

Main content

Postdoctoral Researcher of Big-Data Informed Urban Design

Pieter is a postdoctoral researcher in the Big-Data Informed Urban Design project, where he develops tools and methods to support evidence-informed urban design and planning.

He has a background in architectural engineering and a passion for process analysis and optimisation. Pieter is an expert in 'Design for Change', which studies how to develop built environments that support change and adaptation, and is an experienced transdisciplinary urban researcher, toolmaker, and parametric designer.

His PhD introduced a methodology to integrate 'Design for Change' in sustainable urban development projects. Pieter lectured on parametric design and 'Design for Change' at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Université Libre de Bruxelles.

Research

Pieter is a postdoctoral researcher for the Evidence-informed Urban Design and Planning Processes work stream. His main research focus is the development of a general scoring method for urban space quality, integrating multi-modal data on existing public spaces, usage patterns and user appreciation. It is a key step in the development of Big-Data-informed support tools for urban planners and designers.
