Jimeno Fonseca

Senior Researcher & Project Coordinator of Multi-scale Energy Systems for Low Carbon Cities

Jimeno studied Civil Engineering at the Pontificial Xaverian University in Colombia. His excellent academic record made him the recipient of a full scholarship at the Politecnico di Milano to undertake the Masters in Science in Architectural Engineering. His Masters thesis is on a multi-scale and interdisciplinary approach for sustainable building design, with a focus on building systems performance. He received the highest honours for his thesis and graduated from the programme with summa cum laude.

After graduation, he worked as research assistant and project manager at the Chair of Architecture and Building Systems at ETH Zurich, where he completed his Doctoral studies. The topic of his thesis was the analysis of energy efficiency strategies in community/district energy systems, with a focus on the integration of local energy sources. Based on the findings of his Doctoral thesis, he co-created the City Energy Analyst (CEA), an open-source tool for the analysis of the energy, carbon and financial benefits of urban design options and optimisation of urban energy systems.

In addition, he has been involved in several other research projects and teaching activities on sustainable urban and building design in Europe and Latin-america. Starting 2016, he takes on the role of Senior Researcher and Project Coordinator of the Multi-Scale Energy Systems for Low-Carbon Cities Project at the Future Cities Laboratory.
