Prof Dr François MARECHAL

Co-Principal Investigator of Multi-scale Energy Systems for Low Carbon Cities
Prof François Marechal holds a process engineering degree (1986) and a Ph D from University of Liège in Belgium. In 2001, he moved to Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). In 2013, he has been nominated Adjunct Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Institute of EPFL where he is heading the Industrial Process and Energy Systems Engineering group ( http://ipese.epfl.ch ). The group is now part of the EPFL Valais-Wallis campus located in Sion (CH).
Prof. Marechal is member of the scientific committee of IFP Energies Nouvelles and representative of Switzerland in the working party on the use of Computers in Chemical Engineering of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering. In EPFL, Professor Marechal is responsible of the Minor in Energy, a multidisciplinary minor program offered to the master students of EPFL.

Research
Prof Maréchal is conducting research in the field of the analysis and the design of sustainable energy systems. His activities are focussed on the development of computer aided methods applying process integration and optimisation techniques. He has produced more then 150 scientific papers in the field of energy efficiency in the industry, process system design for biofuels and electricity production, industrial ecology and sustainable energy systems in urban areas studying the optimal integration of renewable energy resources.
