Step into U5's 17 Volcanoes in Crater Studios
Till July 2017 | Watch the portraits of 17 Javanese volcanoes emerge in U5's open studio hosted by NUS Museum, as part of the Tourism and Cultural Heritage project.
Step into the creation process of Zurich-based artist collective U5 at the Crater Studios, an open studio as part of the NUS Museum's prep-room programme.
As part of FCL's 'Tourism and Cultural Heritage' project, U5 will create portraits of 17 Javanese volcanoes out of materials gathered in the context of the research at FCL. Following Junghuhn’s footsteps, these 17 volcanoes form territorial markers that interweave historical and contemporary narratives of Indonesia.
U5 works in various media with an agenda to challenge traditional notions of individual authorship. The work originates from a fascination with material— forming model-like structures by combining found and assembled objects; constructing exuberant architectural installations that oscillate between natural and artificial; overlaying these with constantly evolving video works, live-stream images, sound and performance — that together produce a dynamic, layered experience.
The portraits of the 17 Javanese volcanoes will be realised at Crater Studios as installations, events and performances with participation from artists, students, researchers, and the public.
